HOW Australia treats refugees will be the focus of a lecture on human rights in Armidale by the Honourable Judi Moylan MP next Wednesday 10 July.
Hosted by Armidale Sanctuary Humanitarian Settlement Inc, the lecture is entitled ‘Desperation, Displacement and Detention: Australia’s Treatment of Asylum Seekers Past and Present’, and will be held at the Armidale Town Hall.
Ms Moylan was the first woman to be elected to the House of Representatives in a Conservative party in Western Australia and has since been re-elected seven times to the seat of Pearce.
Throughout her 20-year political career Ms Moylan has been an outspoken advocate for fair and humane treatment of refugees.
Ms Moylan’s critiques of humanitarian policies began during her role as a member of the Human Rights Sub-committee of the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs in 2001 and continued in her role as Deputy Chair of the Standing Committee on Social Policy and Legal Affairs.
She commands significant respect from her parliamentary colleagues on all sides of politics for her focus on facts and pursuit of workable social policy.
“It stands as testament to the progressiveness of the Armidale community that we continue to attract renowned human rights advocates to present on topical socio-political issues such as immigration detention,” Armidale Sanctuary president, Fran Armitage said.
Previous speakers have included other high profile public figures such as the Rev Tim Costello, the Hon. Michael Kirby and most recently former Commonwealth Ombudsman Allan Asher.
Armidale Sanctuary welcomes all interested members of the public to attend the Armidale Town Hall from 5.30pm on Wednesday 10 July.
The lecture will commence at 6pm with light refreshments being served prior to the main event. A $15 entry fee will apply for those wishing to attend the lecture.
All proceeds will be used to assist Armidale Sanctuary to continue sponsoring and supporting refugees under the government’s humanitarian settlement program.
