TWEED’S St Joseph’s College takes on St Paul’s of Manly in the semi-finals of the under-14 state-wide Cochran Cup Catholic School’s league competition.
The game will be played at Port Macquarie on Wednesday 28 August.
The team won through to the semis after a strong performance in the early rounds, starting with the round-robin tournament at Woodlawn earlier this year.
SJC beat Xavier College before defeating Casino and booking a finals appearance against Woodlawn. The visitors then took the Far North Title in extra time, thanks to a try from the kick off by captain Harry Fitzhugh.
The team then travelled to Grafton to play John Paul College. On a bitterly cold day, the Joey’s boys were too classy for St Paul’s winning 28-0, with Jakob Moers the best on the ground.
Their quarter-final then saw them up against St Edward’s of Gosford, who travelled all the way to the Tweed to play the match.
The opponents were good enough to make the long journey to the Tweed and the school support was fantastic on the day.
They had the SJC acrobatics troop performing and the atmosphere was great.
The boys thrived in front of the home crowd and raced to a 24-4 lead at half time.
Scoring first after half time sealed the victory, although the visitors rallied late scoring two great tries. Kingscliff’s Max Bryant was the stand-out performer.
The 28-16 win was enough to see the team progress to the semi-final stage against St Paul’s.
The winner books a place in the grand final on 11 September at St Mary’s in Sydney.
