Tweed Tennis By Peter Luc
WHAT a wonderful and interesting weekend is was at the North East/North West Champion of Champions Tennis Tournament held at Inverell.
After the six hour drive, our Tweed juniors arrived Friday afternoon for the training session or later in the evening when the wildlife came out and temperature dropped to a brisk few degrees.
Early Saturday morning, our juniors hit the courts for a warm-up before being presented with their Tweed District Junior Rep shirts. After a short opening ceremony it was game on but soon after the rain hit and played was stopped until mid-afternoon. During the delay, juniors amused themselves with iPods, etc (as usual), and the table tennis comp was really cranking.
On resumption, matches were reduced to first to four games, with a tiebreak at 3-all. This meant there was no loafing and no slow starts and it made for very exciting tennis.
With the under-10s and under-16s moved to Glen Innes to make up time, our juniors there did great. Mac Mehrtens (under-10 boys) finished seventh in his pool. It was a great effort to get to this level and he’ll benefit greatly heading into next year’s comp.
