TEAM Sonic has taken out the 2013 Junior Pennants Winter Competition grand final held on Friday in Tweed.
Along with the grand finalists, teams also played off for third/fourth and fifth/sixth.
In the fifth/sixth playoff, Kirra Champs beat Tweed Firepower, with the teams having plenty of rallies and playing entertaining tennis.
In the third /fourth playoff, Kirra’s Wilson Wackers and Tweed’s Grandslams saved some of their best tennis for the playoff. In the end, it was tied at three sets all and came down to games where the Wilson Wackers got up by one game (29 to 28).
The grand final, between the undefeated Team Sonic and Club Banora’s Champions, was a fantastic contest.
The Banora team brought their A Game and really took it to minor premiers. With all matches very close, Team Sonic showed why they are undefeated, working out a way to win the critical points.
The final match of the night, the No1 singles, saw Team Sonic’s Zane Sillery-Shaw up against Banora’s James Charge.
James played outstanding tennis, his best tennis all season, with the match going to a tiebreak.
In an epic tiebreak, James was in front and Zane had to dig deep and use all of his skill to get back into it. Zane rose to the occasion and sent down some beautiful winning shots to level the tiebreak and go on to win the match.
In what was an outstanding match, the packed grandstand gave both boys a standing ovation.
Congratulations to Team Sonic and a big thank you to the clubs, coaches, parents and players supporting Friday Pennants, and a special thanks to Shirley Tarbuck for her help during the season.
Next week, there’ll be a wrap up from the Saturday Junior Fixtures Grand Finals.
