MAJOR water main construction is set to start on Wharf Street at Tweed Heads.
From late September to early 2014, Tweed Shire Council will work in Wharf Street on what is the last piece of the major water main upgrade project in central Tweed Heads.
Construction will take place on the western side of Wharf Street between Florence and Boundary streets on the footpath and/or street parking area according to council’s water manager Anthony Burnham.
“Council will roll out a number of measures to minimise the ongoing disruption to residents and businesses during construction, including traffic control,” Mr Burnham, said.
As part of this commitment to minimise the ongoing disruption to businesses and traffic, council will roll out the project in phases: Phase 1 – Florence Street – Frances Street; Phase 2 – Frances Street – Empire Lane; Phase 3 – Empire Lane – Bay Street; Phase 4 – Bay Street – Boundary Street.
“Businesses along Wharf Street will be operating as usual. Council is working with these business owners to ensure continued access for their customers,” he said.
“This is a major project to replace and upgrade essential water infrastructure in central Tweed Heads.
“Central Tweed Heads has been rezoned for multi-storey development. Such development brings a significant increase in demand for water and additional fire-fighting requirements.
“Council has been on the front foot to bolster water capacity in the area, with nine sections of water main already upgraded in central Tweed Heads as part of this project,” he said.
Mr Burnham apologised in advance on behalf of council for any inconvenience.
“Residents and businesses in Tweed Heads have been incredibly patient during these essential works and I’m sure this will continue with Wharf Street,” he said.
The existing Walk of Fame will be restored by Council following construction.
