Season warmers

Clubbies Corner by Tania Phillips

EACH week during the surf lifesaving season Tweed Coast Weekly editor Tania Phillips will be finding out what is happening at all the local surf clubs. This is a free service allowing the clubs to get their news out to the local community.

THIS weekend (Saturday, 19 October) the four Tweed Coast clubs will hold a joint IRB training day at Cabarita from 7.30am (NSW time). The event will provide additional training for new drivers and new crew and allow some of the existing drivers to complete their annual proficiency requirement.

SALT SLSC has started the lifesaving season with some exciting events and news for both club members and the local community.
First up Salt SLSC provided 42 volunteers to assist the successful Corporate Challenge run at Salt Beach over two full-days last month.
The following week the club was back in action again hosting the Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain trial at Salt Beach. This event was also held over two days and what a great event, with Australia’s elite Iron Men and Women competing for a start in the Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain final .
President Mark Humphries was extremely proud of the club members combining to deliver such rave reviews from competitors, families and visitors, many visiting beautiful Salt Village for the first time.

CUDGEN Headland Surf Club is continuing their drive to get all of the active members through their annual proficiency requirements. They have successfully requalified 108 people during their proficiency week which culminated in run/swim/run and board/tube rescue activities on Sunday, 6 October.

STILL at Cudgen and they are currently hosting a visiting lifeguard from the Philippines Red Cross through an exchange program that has been funded by a scholarship fund set up by the club. The program is called the Russell Zahn scholarship and through this scholarship the club hope to be able to fund an opportunity for additional lifeguards/surf lifesavers from emerging nations such as the Philippines and Thailand to come to Australia to learn about our lifesaving practises. The goals of the Scholarship are: (a) To assist with further lifesaving development in Asia Pacific countries in projects undertaken by members of Cudgen Headland SLSC. (b) To provide opportunity for members of other lifesaving organisations to visit Kingscliff and Australia to broaden and enrich their lifesaving experience so that lifesaving in their own countries may be strengthened. (c) To provide opportunity for SLSA members from Cudgen, neighbouring clubs and the wider surf lifesaving community to gain knowledge of lifesaving organisations outside Australia. (d) To foster the development of people to people contacts between SLSA members and other lifesaving organisations, and (e) To promote international lifesaver networks.

CUDGEN Headland are expecting a busy Sunday this week with members supporting a number of events including race five of the Australian Outrigger Canoe Racing Associations series for SQ (categories OC1/OC2/SUP/SKI/V1 series which is being hosted by the Tweed Coast Outrigger Association off Kingscliff beach), and the Rotary Rubber Duck race in the creek along with regular Sunday patrol and nipper activities day.
Sounds like a busy week for the clubbies.
