Little school bridges the gap

Tiny Duranbah Public is doing its best to make that first year at school less daunting for little ones.
Last week the school officially launched their Friday School program.
Teacher Vicki Mylar said Friday School was aimed at bridging the gap between early childhood and school.
She said each Friday, pre-school-aged children would be able to come in and enjoy a range of fun activities and become more familiar with where everything is and what to expect.
“We will have learning games and computer activities in the morning,”
she said.
“After recess there will be Arts and Crafts and then sports games.”
Vicki said the program was aimed at developing confidence in the young would-be students.
“So when they start school they come in feeling confident and they know what they are going to be doing,” she said.
As part of the launch, the school invited the youngsters from the nearby Kingscliff Mini-School. The community pre-school also runs programs to prepare their young students for “big school” and visits like this one to Duranbah and one planned for St Anthony’s later in year play a big part in those preparations.
