CUDGEN Green is in a strong position after day one of its under-12 Tweed District Cricket game against Pottsville at the weekend.
Pottsville was at home to the competition leader Cudgen Green and after winning the toss and batting Pottsville struggled early. However Mitchell Boyd and Daniel Acret both scored 30 not out to steady the ship and help their team to a respectable 3/118 after their 24 overs.
However, aggressive batting saw Cudgen Green compile an imposing 2/174 from 24 overs putting it in the box-seat heading into the second day.
The other game between Cudgen Gold and Murwillumbah at Murwillumbah looks set to go right down to the wire.
Gold won the toss and sent Murwillumbah in with the home team ending its 24-over stint with 5/112. In reply Cudgen Gold finished its overs with 2/110.
Pottsville will be looking for quick runs when it resumes the Ballina District Competition third-round under-14s match against Alstonville at Alstonville at the weekend.
The home team won the toss and elected to bowl, restricting Pottsville to 4/64 at the change of innings with R. Lillis not out on 11 and C. MacDowell not out on 5, set to continue the innings this Saturday.
Alstonville showed intent to move the score along right from the start, however good bowling from L. Wylie 3/11, and R. Lillis 3/3, stemmed the tide with Alstonville finishing with 8/93 at the end of play. Pottsville will look to post a good score and then pick up the remaining two wickets to win the match.
Murwillumbah also travelled for the first of its two-day games, playing Ballina Bears Two at Saunders Oval, Ballina.
The Bears won the toss and put Murwillumbah in to bat with the visitors posting an imposing first innings of 2/120 from their 24 overs, with Callum Opperman retired on 40 and Ashton Wilson not out on 33.
In reply Ballina Bears 2 were 7/58 from their overs with great all-round bowling from the Murwillumbah team.
Catches win matches and Ben Champley and Will McLean both took two great catches to set Murwillumbah up for what should be a great win.
Impressive bowling has put Cudgen in the box seat against Alstonville Blue in the weekend’s under-16 Ballina District third round match at Kingscliff.
Cudgen had Alstonville back in the pavilion for just 64 runs in the 20th over with all six bowlers contributing. Brodie Paddon took 2/14, Max Bryant 2/11, Connor Ziebell 2/6, Ryan Lahrs 1/9, Corey Kirkham 1/7, Tom Booth 1/ 2 and Cooper Lowrey 1/1.
Cudgen mowed down the opposition score in the 15th over and at the end of play were 3/92. They will be looking to set a target for Alstonville and take home the points in day two this Saturday
In the other under-16s game, Mullum/Murbah travelled to Alstonville to take on Alstonville Gold.
Gold won the toss and with no hesitation put the Mullum/Murbah in the field.
The visitors contained the Alstonville team early on however nearing the end of their 45 overs Alstonville Gold took to the bowling and amassed a sizeable total of 6/197.
Mullum/Murbah will have a tough day next week trying to reach the target set.
