Tweed Cricket By Hank Thompson
ROUND two has begun, and it’s been a mixed bag for the Tweed teams.
Terranora was outstanding against premiership heavyweight Casino, and Cudgen dominated the first day against Lennox.
Pottsville has a lot of work to do should it wish to stay in the game against Tintenbar, while Murwillumbah has already lost on first innings against Alstonville.
Pottsville vTintenbar
Pottsville won the toss and made the correct choice to bat first, on a wicket they knew would play tricks early on but flatten during the day.
The Pelicans lost their first wicket at 27, and unfortunately this would be the best partnership of the day, with wickets falling regularly. Jay Hoare and Aiden Rogers were Potty’s best with 26 and 35 respectively, Pottsville all out for just 130.
Tintenbar then batted, and finished at 3/102 at stumps.
Jay Hoare the best of the bowlers with 1/16 off 10 overs. However Jay was more than impressed with 15-year-old debutant Kyle Lowman (20), and thinks if the Pelicans can take some quick wickets anything can happen.
Cudgen v Lennox
Cudgen lost the toss and amazingly were put into bat on a wicket that wicketkeeper Cal Gall described as playing pretty well with a superfast outfield.
Cudgen began poorly though, Cal Gall falling cheaply. But that only began the disaster for Lennox, Cudgen posting big partnerships and with last week’s 200-not-out batsmen Jesse Harrington still hitting the ball well (49), Cudgen blasted 6/319. Tait Burns posted a century (120), and was well supported by the evergreen Craig Wilson (42), and young gun Callum Zeibell (42 not out). Cudgen then bowled, and helped by a couple of run-outs had Lennox struggling at 4/46.
Terranora v Casino
After last week’s loss to Ballina, Terranora needed a big turnaround to compete against a side it usually has an excellent record against. Winning the toss and confidently batting, Terranora scored a large 232. Wicketkeeper and captain Pete Suttcliffe was a very happy man, especially with the younger guys Elijah Arnold (77) and Ethan Spratt (30). They were well supported by all-rounder Dave Parkes (48). Casino however is an excellent experienced all-round side, but scoring 232 should be enough to get the Lakes boys over the line, in what will be yet again another upset over the boys from the bush.
Murwillumbah v Alstonville
Murwillumbah started the day well, winning the toss and batting on a superb Rabjones wicket. However, this would be the most luck they would have on this day, losing wickets quickly against what has been described as the best bowling team in the competition. Best for the Murbah boys was newcomer and former Western Suburbs fullback Andrew Meads(19 not out) and James Buckland with 24. Murbah all out for just 84. Alstonville then smashed their way to 263 for the loss of six wickets in 44 overs.
Wickets were shared among the bowlers, with the best being Vinnie Quigley with 1/10.
