Tweed Cricket with Hank Thompson
THE conclusion of round three, and finally a Tweed side manages a win with Cudgen defeating fellow Tweed side Terranora while the other all Tweed clash ended in a draw.
Pottsville v Murwillumbah
Murwillumbah resumed at 3/33, still a long way from the Pelicans 7/291. The Murwillumbah boys made an excellent start, losing only one more wicket with the score at 142, but due to numerous rain delays, the match was always destined for a draw. Both teams battled hard, with some excellent batting by youngsters John Buckland (50) and Vinnie Quigley (41) and tight bowling by Riley McCoy (3/37) and all-rounder Andrew Little (2/11).
Murwillumbah may have considered themselves a big chance with Pete Dillon and Josh Singh still at the crease, however the game ended in a draw, both teams taking the points. Fast bowler Nat Wilson was proud of his team’s commitment during a tough day.
Cudgen v Terranora
Cudgen immediately declared at 6/254, denying superstar Tait Burns (153 not out) a chance at a double ton, and youngster Dean Stoddart (40 not out) a chance at a maiden half-century. Terranora were therefore some 150 runs away from making the Hornets bat again, and it would take an amazing effort by this young team to do so against an attack including the comp’s best bowler Michael Anderson.
Surprisingly, Anderson bowled just four overs, with captain Terry Wilson bowling the most again in the 11 overs.
Terranora easily passed the Hornets’ total, meaning the side would have to bat again. Cal Zeibell was a standout for the Hornets, taking an excellent Michelle five-for (5/30 off 10 overs). Cudgen passed the total required (32) for the loss of two wickets.
The day was marred by a few rain delays, with Caleb Gall saying “the players were sweeping water away” in an attempt to get the field safe for play to resume.
Terranora was best served by the Baker boys (scores unavailable) and Adam Ridgeway.
SCG Cup
Tweed’s yearly attempt at becoming the best district in the state takes another turn this week with a rematch with Coffs Harbour, at Coffs Harbour. Captain Tait Burns is feeling quietly confident about his boys’ chances, even though the last two years their competition has stopped at this exact game.
“Last year our bowlers did a great job in limiting the Coffs side to just 195 runs, but unfortunately our batsmen couldn’t get us over the line,” an enthusiastic Burns stated. “I will be looking to big games from Jim ‘Patch’ Adams and Riley ‘The Real’ McCoy, two youngsters in prime form with both the bat and ball.
“Jay Hoare is definitely due for a score, so I am counting on him to produce the type of game he is more than capable of.”
