Flat pickings

Fishing On the Tweed with David Solano

I HAVEN’T been for a fish with local expert Craig “Cozza” Costigan for a while – so it was with great joy that I accepted his invitation for a fish down Tumbulgum way on his boat on Sunday morning.
So there we were at daybreak sitting under and around the bridge, Craig has one of the best electric motors I’ve seen, if you want to stay in the one spot you just push a button and it connects to GPS, so regardless of wind and current it will keep you in your selected spot easily.
Craig jigged up some live bait while I tried an array of different soft plastics. I ended up with a flathead and Craig landed a 45cm mangrove jack on a live.
Next we headed to the Mur-bah bridge where we both caught more flathead. We also cast around the sugar mill at Condong but again all we could catch were flathead.
Don’t get me wrong as I like catching flathead, but we were targeting jewies and jacks. Craig did get a schooly, I’ve never seen anything like it, so small, about 20cm if that. It put up a bit of a fight but once on the boat Craig and I looked each other and had a good chuckle as it was returned to the water. Cheers.
