THE Gold Coast Sporting Hall of Fame has launched a fundraising campaign to extend its Owen Park headquarters at Southport.
The Coast’s not-for-profit sports heritage headquarters is bursting at the seams and plans for an addition that would greatly increase the existing floor space have been officially launched with a grant of $60,000 from the Gold Coast City Council.
The hall committee, made up entirely of volunteers, hope the remaining funding in the region of $300,000 can be achieved through other government, corporate and private donations.
“Councillor Dawn Crichlow was marvellous in securing the council monies and they will go a long way to covering the approval, site works and other preliminary costs,” hall of fame president Daphne Pirie said.
“But we still need the bulk of the funds for the building itself, which we hope might be in place towards the middle of 2014.
“That’s perfect timing for the start of the light rail right outside our door on Queen Street and time enough for the hall to be a venue of some description for Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games lead-in activities,” she said.
