Round Mountain Girls move one step closer

They’ve launched their album but Tweed Coast blue grass exponents Round Mountain Girls aren’t resting on their Laurels.

The boys from coast and country will play Twin Towns Breezes room from Friday through to Sunday night this week, giving local audiences a chance to hear more of their second album “One Step Closer”.

The sophomore release was officially unleashed on the public last month and, according to banjo player and guitarist Chris Easton, the response has been “fantastic”.

“We had about 450 pack into The Ivory Tavern in mid-January to greet the official album, which blew us away,” he laughed.

“We didn’t realise we were so popular. We had people turn up from as far away as the Central Coast and Melbourne! Everyone was given an album as they walked in and so, after the launch, we’d already sold half of the ones we’d got pressed. We’re re-pressing.”

As well as huge Tweed support, the disc was made album of the week by ABC North Coast just before they headed off to Tamworth this year.

“Didn’t win the Golden Fiddle Awards but nice to be nominated anyway,” Eaton said.

“Tamworth was huge. We packed out The Albert on the last Saturday, which must hold about 700. Lots of radio and lots of sold albums.”

And it just seems to be getting bigger for the local boys.

“We’ve also been approached to play as a headline act at The Grafton Flame Tree Festival on March 2 and The Ballina Coastal Country Music Festival in October, along with Troy Cassar Daley,” he said.

“In addition, we’ve been selected (along with five other acts from the northern rivers region) to pilot a scheme funded by NSW Arts Foundation whereby they fast-track acts of potential to industry professionals (distributors, agents, labels etc). There’ll be a showcase next month in Byron featuring the six acts and a compilation album, whereby each act will contribute two tracks.

“We’ve got an interview with ABC Gold and Tweed Coast Friday (today) am, where we’ll play live and plug the Twinnies gigs.”

And then in March they head off to Coffs, Port MacQ, Central Coast and, in April, to Newcastle and Sydney to spread the love – including a gig at The Royal Easter Show.
