NATIONAL Youth Week, the largest celebration of young people in Australia, begins this Friday and runs until 13 April and Sport UNE is getting behind it.
Sport UNE will run some free classes for youth, including a Zumba class next Wednesday and a Young Guns Bootcamp class on Sunday 13 April, for anyone aged 12 years and over.
“The classes will be fun and something quite different for the kids,” Sport UNE’s gym and fitness co-ordinator Mally McCormack said.
“The bootcamp class is specifically for the young ones, however with Zumba, a Latin-inspired dance workout, an adult must accompany them.”
This year Youth Week in NSW is focusing on the challenges young people face in supporting the mental health and wellbeing of their friends and family.
“Studies show that mental health is often closely linked with physical health,” Ms McCormack said.
“When we exercise, endorphins or ‘feel-good’ hormones are released and if you’re involved with group fitness the social interaction is also beneficial.
“You cannot underestimate the health benefits of staying active and with the increase in sedentary lifestyles, it is more important than ever for people to be active at all stages of their lives.”
Both UNE and Sport UNE will also have a stall at the Youth Expo at Lazenby Hall next Wednesday.
