SOUTH Australian Governor Kevin Scarce was presented an Honorary Doctorate of Letters at the University of New England on Friday, in recognition of his long and successful career serving his nation.
The former UNE student, who went on to become a Rear Admiral in the Royal Australian Navy, was the occasional speaker for Friday’s autumn graduation of more than 250 UNE School of Education students,
His Excellency Rear Admiral Scarce was presented his Honorary Doctorate of Letters by UNE chancellor John Watkins.
“His Excellency graduated from the University of New England in 1990 with a Bachelor of Financial Administration,” Mr Watkins said.
“His commitment to Australia’s defence services and veterans over many years has been recognised with awards including the Conspicuous Service Cross in 1994.
“He was appointed a Member in the Military Division of the Order of Australia in The Queen’s Birthday 2001 Honours List and an Officer in the Military Division in the Australia Day 2004 Honours List.
“Subsequently, he was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia in the 2008 Australia Day Honours Awards for distinguished contributions to Australia’s defence industry and to the people of South Australia.”
On Saturday, around 350 students from the School of Medicine and Health attended the graduation ceremony, with the occasional address delivered by NSW Ministry of Health’s chief pharmacist Judith Jackson.
