Open gardens a bloomin’ success

My Garden – Jude Costello

WOW, what an effort and what a response. A total of $8724 has been raised by local gardeners supporting farmers!
Having been a drought-affected farmer over the years, it means so much to know there are people out there who care.
This week just gone has really shown there are with several fund-raisers in our district that have been generously supported by the community.
I did not have the luxury of visiting all the gardens, however, those I did get to were wonderful and once again “a big thank you” to the owners for opening on such short notice and the organisers for their inspiration and huge effort.
The rain has been fantastic greening up our landscape, now we need some run-off to refill the dams and follow-up falls and the warm weather to continue to as long as possible to get through winter.
Autumn is the time to enjoy beautiful foliage and plant spring bulbs. As well as some (a lot in my case) tidying up, weeding and mulching. Being lovely and damp it is so much easier to plant bulbs and pull out weeds.
It is a great time time plant cool climate species as they can start to establish before winter sets in and then really get and great start in spring.
I am surprised to see some of my spring flowering roses are in bloom after the rain – so beautiful. The recurrent ones are also blooming making the gardens a joy.
My (two only) dahlias have flowered right through all the rain and are still beautiful, there will definitely be more going in next spring.
So many of the summer perennials have reshot and are now flowering again giving thanks to the rain gods.
