Boundary Rider By MATT NICHOLLS
DESPITE the sun shining brightly on Saturday, Armidale’s curators were unable to prepare wickets for the cricket grand finals, meaning there were joint winners in all three grades.
To put it bluntly, such results are like dancing with your sister.
There are two changes I would like to see happened in the Armidale District Cricket Association next season.
Firstly, bring back two-day cricket. With just four sides in first grade, the season goes too long with 18 one-day games.
Six two-day matches and six one-day matches would be brilliant.
The second change would be to introduce a reserve weekend for the grand final, reducing the chances of a washout.
Standing room only
URALLA Rugby League officials are expecting a massive crowd at Woodville Oval this Saturday for the clash against Armidale.
The Tigers are back in first grade this season and are confident of doing well in 2014.
With a few former Armidale players in the Uralla line-up, expect the match to be full of fire from the opening whistle.
State squad selection
SEVERAL junior football players from Armidale have been selected in the Northern NSW Football squads for the upcoming national championships.
Hunter Hine and Lachlan Harris were picked in the under-13 boys’ country side, while Izzie Winter was named in the under-15 girls’ squad.
The under-12s don’t play in a championships, but a development squad was picked, with two Armidale boys represented. Tao Greives and Jake McCann will be a part of the squad.
Officials impressed
ARMIDALE’S place on the NSW Harness Racing calendar is almost guaranteed after its two meetings went off without a hitch.
Sunday’s Cup meeting drew an even bigger crowd than the previous Sunday and it seems all boxes were ticked.
Dubbo-based Harness Racing NSW director Chris John made the trip north with his wife and said he was impressed with the facilities at Armidale.
There is also a rumour floating around that Armidale’s harness track could be resurfaced following the success of the comeback meetings.
