In brief
OLIVIA Moore was recently recognised for her leadership and community involvement by the Zonta Club of Armidale.
Moore is a school captain at O’Connor Catholic College and was the inaugural president of the Z Club at her school.
At the presentation dinner for the Young Women in Public Affairs Awards for 2014, she spoke passionately about her plans to undertake volunteer work in Kenya after her HSC exams, particularly in a children’s home and a maternity hospital.
Nightwork starts
SECTIONS of the New England Highway will be closed this month for routine roadworks.
Most of the work will be done at night to lessen the impact of traffic.
Closures will be at Tenterfield, Glen Innes, Guyra and Uralla at different stages.
“Weather permitting, night work will be carried out from 6pm until 6am the following day,” Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall said.
“Motorists are asked to comply with all temporary signposting and traffic control measures in these locations and to proceed with care through worksites.”
Firey tales
WAYNE Zikan will be the guest speaker at the Armidale Family History Group’s monthly meeting.
The April meeting will be held next Tuesday at 7.30pm at the group’s headquarters on Kentucky Street.
Mr Zikan will speak about a 1932 fire which claimed the life of two Armidale firefighters after an explosion at the building of H. Braund and Company.
Eight fire-fighters were later recognised for their bravery in fighting the blaze.
Adopt a puss
ARMIDALE RSPCA is running a special on cats during April.
Those who want to adopt a cat or kitten can do so for $130, or two for $250.
The price of dogs remains the same at $220.
