Healthy cycling push

MORE bikes will be hitting the streets of Armidale between 15 and 22 September, as NSW Bike Week is celebrated.

The annual community event promotes cycling as a healthy, sustainable, economical and fun activity for riders of all types.
Sustainable Living Armidale (SLA) has organised three events, starting with a Ride in the Park, beginning at the Farmers’ Market at 10.30am on Sunday 15 September.
The rise is suitable for all ages and there will be some prizes for children and adults All participants also go into a draw for a brand new bicycle.
A new event this year is the Commute Challenge, where individuals or teams log and tally their bike trips from Monday 16 to Friday 20 September. Participants are included in the draw for the bike prize.
“The purpose of this competition is to get people pedalling instead of driving, and to promote bicycling as a sustainable transportation mode in Armidale,” Emily Angell, from the SLA Transport group said.
“Any ride you take from point A to point B for a specific purpose can be included. For instance, commutes from home to work, to do the shopping, to visit a friend or run an errand, or any other non-recreational ride that may have otherwise been done in a vehicle.”
Points are awarded not just for kilometres, but also number of trips, with bonus points for new riders.
Commute score cards can be picked up at the SLA Ride In The Park event at the Farmers’ Market, at Sport UNE, Armidale Dumaresq Council, or the Goldfish Bowl café in Jessie Street.
More information is on the SLA website www.slaati.org or email any questions to bikeweek@slaati.org
The winner of the bike prize will be drawn at the final SLA event: The Finish Line – a celebration and social afternoon with drinks and nibbles at 3pm on Saturday 21 September at the Armidale Club.
