In brief
GUYRA Central School has been allocated more than $800,000 to establish the Guyra Community Trades Skills Centre.
The money will go towards the construction of a purpose-built facility to incorporate an engineering workshop and equipment.
The centre will deliver qualifications in engineering, including trades of fitter and turner and welder.
Member for New England Barnaby Joyce said the $834,088 came from a $209 million package from the Federal Government to establish 136 new training centres across Australia.
“It is essential we continue to invest in education to provide the next generation of workers with the skills to contribute to the economy,” Mr Joyce said.
“As Agriculture Minister, I am well aware of the skills shortages across rural Australia.
“These training centres will keep young people in our communities and give them an opportunity to start a career closer to home.”
“I hope these centres will show young people that they do not have to live in the city to have a fulfilling and worthwhile career.”
Carers’ survey
CARERS in and around Armidale are needed to contribute to a study of carers’ mental health and wellbeing.
Local carers do not have the same access to services as people in cities, so this study will help inform policy makers about local challenges.
The study aims to give a voice to some hard-working, and often silent, Australians.
Participants are asked to complete a confidential survey, which is simple and takes just 30 minutes to complete, online or on paper.
People who complete the survey will receive a $5 gift voucher.
