THE National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is conducting a series of overnight four-wheel drive tagalong tours to the Carrai Plateau, passing through four World Heritage listed reserves, between October 2013 and February 2014.
“We are planning on offering at least two tagalong tours starting in October, but another may be scheduled if enough interest is shown,” Walcha Area operations co-ordinator Lindsay Fulloon said.
“Last time the tour was ran it booked out in three hours, so we are hoping to cater for more this time.”
The first tour will run on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 October followed by another on 9 and 10 November with another in January if interest is high.
The tour will commence in Armidale and pass through extensive areas of rainforest that are part of The Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area. You will also visit the old villages of Kookaburra, Daisy Plain and Haydonville, as well as two of the best but least known lookouts in Northern NSW, Hoppys Lookout and Mary’s View.
Participants will travel through Oxley Wild Rivers, Werrikimbe, Willi Willi and Carrai National Parks and The Castles Nature Reserve, with an overnight camp at historic Daisy Plains Huts. The tours will be lead by a specialist ranger and provide the opportunity for a unique insight into the area’s natural and historic heritage.
The tour will cost $200 per vehicle, with a maximum of six vehicles per tour, with early bookings essential. The fee includes all permits and an overnight camp in the park. Participants in the tours will need to bring all their own food and camping equipment for an overnight stay, but a tent may not be required, as Daisy Plains Huts have some room for people to sleep under cover. A 4WD drive vehicle with low range and high clearance is essential.
