Boundary Rider By MATT NICHOLLS
ONE of the highlights of the sporting weekend was the return of Mitch Cooper to the Armidale Rams line-up.
Regarded as one of the best players in Group 19, Cooper missed a couple of seasons to spend more time with his family.
He was a welcome addition to the side on Saturday and it was fitting that he scored the Rams’ first try of the season.
No doubt there will be many more to come.
Cash for coffers
URALLA officials would have been rapt with the crowd numbers at Woodville Oval on Saturday.
The two men on the gate were kept busy and the takings would have been welcome to the club’s coffers.
On the field, the Tigers made a successful return to first grade and could argue they were unlucky not to walk away with the points.
Rugby numbers soar
THE annual TAS Rugby Carnival will be held in Armidale this weekend.
This year the school is expecting at least 3000 visitors. Accommodation in Armidale is fully booked and there are only a couple of available rooms in Uralla and Walcha.
Visitors will be arriving Friday afternoon with the first game at 8.45am Saturday and the last match at noon on Sunday.
Hoops stars shine
ARMIDALE High School students Sam Struck, Emmanuel Najak and Matur Maluach have been selected in the North West open basketball team.
The students were selected in the team of 10 after Armidale High competed in zone and regional trials.
Armidale High basketball coach Steve Bartolo said the boys responded well under pressure.
The boys could do with some financial support to play in the state titles and anyone interested in lending a hand should contact the school.
Outdated thinking
WITHOUT naming names, some sports in the region take media coverage for granted.
One particular group is a serial offender at having its head in the sand when it comes to providing scores from the weekend and basic details, such as names of scorers.
The most proactive sports will be the ones rewarded in the long-term.
