ERIMAS Zerazion’s epic attempt to become an Australian citizen was realised last week.
After fleeing from Eritrea to Kenya as a refugee, Mr Zerazion made his way to Armidale in 2009.
Since arriving, he has completed a Diploma in Graphic Design at TAFE New England and is now studying computer science at the University of New England.
“Armidale is totally different to where I am from, in a nice way,” Mr Zerazion said.
“But the best thing about living here is that you are able to do whatever you want, like studying.”
Mr Zerazion was one of 12 people to be granted citizenship at the Armidale Dumaresq Council chamber last Wednesday.
Nationalities represented at the ceremony included Bangladesh, the United Kingdom, Sri Lanka, Sudan and New Zealand.
Mayor Laurie Bishop said the citizenship ceremonies were one of the most enjoyable aspects of his role.
“It is a real honour to officially welcome our newest citizens and preside over the pledge of commitment they give to Australia,” he said.
“Armidale has become a rich, vibrant and diverse city because of the significant contributions of people, like we have seen here today at the ceremony, who have chosen to become Australian citizens.”
At the conclusion of the ceremony new citizens and guests were treated to a rendition of the Advance Australia Fair by Duval High student Winona Rumble.
