How were the images in newspapers and advertisements created in the 1950 and 1960s?
Curator of the Museum of Printing, Benjamin Thorn, will reveal all (or at least all he’s been told) in a talk for History Week, Reproducing the Pictures, at 6pm on Thursday 12 September in the Museum of Printing underneath NERAM.
The talk will use material from MoP’s on-going oral history project and will describe the processes from the graphic design through to the creation of the blocks for printing largely in the words of the men and women in the industry.
This means that we get a perspective not only on the technological processes but also on the culture of the industry.
The printing industry has changed massively in the last 50 years. Some changes are for the better, such as the improvements in occupational health and safety, while others are more questionable, such as the increase in speed that leaves little time for actually considering what images are created.
History Week, organised by the History Council of NSW, runs from 7-15 September with the theme, Picture This, and involves events around NSW.
