Armidale Dumaresq War Memorial Library and Friends of the Library are presenting storytime with Jusinta Collins, an early childhood specialist and mum of six. Storytime will take place one Saturday a month.
As her children’s taste in reading expanded, Jusinta realised they needed more choice. After a conversation with Ian Greenhalgh, Manager at the library, Storytime with the Rainbow Serpent came into being.
Jusinta will tell stories the same way traditional Aboriginal stories from the Dreaming were told. The children will help her with the storytelling by adding their own sound and movements as they interpret the story. At the same time they will expand their use of social skills that are helpful in a more formal classroom – such as taking turn and co-operating with peers.
“This style of storytime leads to a more developed attention span,” said Jusinta.
“I am passionate about that because so many children begin their first year of school with an attention span that runs the length of a cartoon episode.”
It wasn’t until Jusinta started her Early Childhood career that she realised how much she loves story telling. She has chosen The Echidna and the Shade Tree for the first Storytime with the Rainbow Serpent. Children will hear the story, sing songs and make an echidna to take home. Come along and join her at the Armidale Dumaresq War Memorial Library from 11.00am to noon on Saturday, October 15. The following sessions will be held on November 19 and December 17 at the same time.
Please note, this storytime is in addition to the weekly sessions held on Tuesdays at 11.00am. They are sponsored by Backburn and the Armidale Dumaresq War Memorial Library.
