Elite workshop sets right note

OUTSTANDING young musicians from the New England Conservatorium of Music, violinists Eliza Scott and Jess Wright and cellists Izzy and Mia Emanuel have enjoyed a unique musical experience.
Through NECOM’s association with the NSW Regional Conservatoriums network, they were selected to attend a special two-day orchestral workshop for regional conservatorium musicians at the Sydney Opera House.
Guests included musicians from Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, as well as conductor Rory Macdonald, the assistant conductor to Concertgebouw Chief Conductor Mariss Jansons.
The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra was in Sydney for the first time as part of its four-week world tour to celebrate its 125th anniversary.
It has been ranked as the best symphony orchestra in the world, an incredible accolade when its competitors include the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonic Orchestras.
NECOM director Susanne James said the regional workshop was a “priceless opportunity”.
“As a regional conservatorium we are incredibly lucky to be able to give our young musicians this experience,” she said.
Eliza Scott did NECOM and Armidale proud by being selected as Concertmaster for the regional orchestra workshop to lead excerpts of Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite and Tchaikovksy’s Symphony No 5.
As an added bonus to the workshop, NECOM students were given a free ticket to attend the Concertgebouw’s performance in the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House – an unforgettable experience.
