Skates on for derby contest

THE fastest growing sport in the world isn’t played on a pitch, there are no goal posts, there isn’t even a ball.
The fastest growing sport in the world, roller derby, is a quick paced, hard-hitting, full impact sport played entirely on roller skates.
This Saturday, the Armidale Roller Derby League will present an exciting bout at Sport UNE’s Campbell Hall.
Following on from their recent success competing against Outcast Derby in Bateau Bay, the New England Derby NED Kennedys will be taking part in Festivus for the Restofus.
The NED Kennedys will be made up of skaters from the New England region, both from Armidale and Tamworth.
Several of the girls who skated in the Bateau Bay bout will be hitting the track again, joined by newcomers to the team and the male members of Armidale Roller Derby for the co-ed bout.
The team will be taking on The Restofus, a team made up of skaters from Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie, Muswelbrook and Toowoomba.
The Armidale league will also be providing a large number of referees and non-skating officials for the bout.
Doors open to the public at 3pm, tickets are $10 with kids under 10 years free.
