FASHION will be at the forefront at the Armidale Jockey Club on Monday, with competition on the catwalk expected to be fierce.
While the Armidale Cup will be the main prize up for grabs on the track, the fashions on the field has grown in popularity over the years.
Jockey club secretary Jim Dedes said Armidale Cup day was no longer just about the horses.
“We like to think it’s the biggest social event of the year,” he said.
“The fashions on the field competition has become bigger each year and it’s a real winner for those that don’t have an interest in racing.”
Mr Dedes said he was expecting crowd numbers to be down this year after the town’s half-day holiday was removed, but hoped for another good crowd.
“We’ve got an Armidale-owned horse in the Cup and that will create plenty of interest,” he said of the Craig Martin-trained Brave Ali, of which Mr Dedes is a part-owner.
“The track is in great condition, probably the best it’s ever been, and it’s also St Patrick’s Day, so there’s good reason to celebrate.”
