Veteran on cusp of win

SCONE trainer Luke Griffith is hoping veteran gelding Kwilas Law can boost his impressive track record in Monday’s $35,000 Armidale Cup (1900m).
The nine-year-old gelding was an eye-catching winner of the Armidale Cup Prelude (1900m) earlier this month and his trainer is hopeful he can make it two wins in a row.
“He’s been a great horse over the years,” Griffith said.
“I think he’s won $220,000 in prizemoney now and he’s run 25 seconds and 13 thirds with just 12 wins.
“If he converted some of those second placings into wins, he’d be much better regarded.”
One of those second placings came in the Armidale Cup two years ago, when Kwilas Law was beaten by Zippy Zariz in what was probably the run of the race.
That year, the veteran gelding ran third in the Cup Prelude and Griffith said Kwilas Law was going better this year.
“That doesn’t mean he’ll finish any closer,” he said.
“These country cup fields are always strong and tough to win.
“He has pulled up well from the run in Armidale and we’ll just see how he goes.”
