Edna celebrates 100

Armidale resident Edna May Levingston celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends by her side at BUPA Aged Care Facility on Tuesday, September 6, 2011.
Born in 1911, Edna grew up in Armidale, along with her seven siblings Mona, Jean, Joyce, Isla, Gordon and Geoff. Her youngest sister, Isla, is the last of her siblings still alive today and was there to celebrate with Edna last week. Edna’s parents were Joesph and Ethel Hamilton.
Edna went to the Armidale Demonstration School and later went on to work at Moon’s Bakery in Beardy Street.
Edna met her husband William Levingston from Walcha, when he drove the delivery truck to Levingston and Son General Store that was on the Corner of Marsh and Jeffrey Streets. William and Edna were married at St Paul’s Presbyterian Church on June 29, 1938. Once married, Edna and William moved out to “Ramsbeck”, Wongwibinda that was owned by the Robinson family. This was during the war, so there were ration cards; they only went into town once a month for rations. Edna believes they were lucky, as they had plenty of fresh vegetables and meat from the property.
Edna and William had two children, Janice and David. Edna has four grand-children and great-grand-children to enjoy.
Edna also received a letter from the Queen who acknowledged and congratulated Edna on her 100th birthday.
