NATHAN Carson and Craig Hyde ensured the prestigious Armidale Jug stayed in town after beating a big field at the Armidale Golf Club on Sunday.
Carson and Hyde combined to score +11 in the par event, defeating Rick Porter and Peter Raymond, who returned +10.
The victory gave family bragging rights to Carson – his father Trevor has been trying to win the jug for decades and has only missed the event once since Nathan was born.
Thunderstorms made life tough for golfers competiting in the afternoon, with three safety recalls and suspended play at lunchtime after hail covered the greens and fairways.
Because of the afternoon delays and tough conditions, some golfers pulled the pin on their rounds.
Third in the jug were Ian Purvis and Grant Uphill with +9, defeating Jim Melville and Jim Hanland on a countback.
Matt Schaeffer and Tom Armitage scored +7 to be fifth.
The best gross score with +2 was Brett Woodward and Newcastle player Brian Carmichael.
Saturday’s Solomon’s Trophy was taken out by Steve Fell and Bill Turner, who scored an impressive 49 points in the stableford event.
They defeated Glen Innes visitors Scott Wilson and Jim Crowhurst, who scored 47.
