Planting one tree or 3000 can go a long way to promote mental well being and the Celebrate, Connect, Grow tree planting event held by the Armidale Mental Health Interagency Group in conjunction with the Armidale Urban River Group (AURG) and Landcare on Sunday at the Rologas Fields did just that.
A bumper crowd of eager community members gathered with a trusty trowel and gloves in hand to plant 2500 native shrubs along Dumaresq Creek. Angus Adair from Armidale Urban River Group (AURG) was thrilled with the turnout.
“It has been such a wonderful turnout here today, with people taking advantage of the much warmer conditions to get outdoors and plant,” said Angus.
“We are planting 2500 local native plants today, including Callistemon and Tea Tree and a few Eucalypts.”
NSW Health approached the Armidale Urban River Group (AURG) to be involved with Mental Health Month and to coordinate the tree planting during the Celebrate, Connect, Grow event.
“We were very happy to be involved in the project to help promote mental health to the Armidale community,” said Angus.
“We were already planning to do some work at this site, with a lot of the funding coming from the Commonwealth Biodiversity Fund and Armidale Dumaresq Council provided all of the mulch, which has been fantastic.
“Armidale Mental Health Interagency Group has put on the wonderful displays of information; it really has been a fantastic day as well as the Armidale Dumaresq Lions Club providing a sausage sizzle.”
