THE School of Arts at The University of New England is hosting its Children’s Writers and Illustrators in Residence program again this year, with three two-week residencies at NERAM over spring.
James Roy, Trent Denham, and Deborah Abela will be visiting from September to November, working on new projects, and running workshops and other public events for writers and illustrators in the region.
The first visiting novelist is James Roy, who will be in Armidale from 14-28 September. He has received major awards such as the Premier’s Award for Anonymity Jones and the NSW Premier’s Award for Town.
Roy will be holding two workshops, the first this Saturday 21 September at 2pm-4pm – Finding the Story You Simply Must Tell. The workshop includes a public talk to follow, will take place at NERAM and costs $20.
The second workshop is a perfect holiday activity for school kids from senior primary to junior secondary.
How to Tell the Perfect Lie will bring out the creative storyteller in kids, and Roy will be using the NERAM collections as inspiration for stories. The workshop being held at NERAM next Tuesday 24 September from 10am-12pm and costs $5 per person.
Illustrator Trent Denham and writer Deborah Abela will be in Armidale during October and November respectively.
Denham is a digital animator and illustrator who recently represented Australia at the Bologna Book Fair. He will be staying in Armidale from 14-28 October.
Abela will visit 10-23 November and has written detective fiction for kids, including the Max Remy Super Spy novels, She is currently moving into steampunk fiction.
The program is funded by the Copyright Agency’s Cultural Fund, and supported by the School of Arts, NERAM, and the Children’s Book Council, Armidale Branch. Most of the talks and workshops will be held at NERAM.
