In brief
ARMIDALE Dumaresq Council is fast becoming the benchmark for innovative, sustainable environmental practice after winning an award at the Local Government NSW Excellence in the Environment Awards.
The council walked away with a win in the 20,000 to 60,000 population category for sustainability framework and two highly commended gongs for air quality communication and organics recovery.
“This is an amazing achievement for Armidale Dumaresq Council and the community,” sustainability officer Carol Davies said.
“We were competing with metropolitan councils with million-dollar budgets and sustainability teams.
“In Armidale we have a very modest budget and our community is our sustainability team.”
Stables’ doors shut
ICONIC Armidale gift shop The Stables will close its doors at the end of next month.
Owners Jeni and Terry Mackenzie said they were unable to find a buyer for the store after deciding to retire.
Located in the heritage building on the corner of Danger and Moore streets, The Stables had been in business for more than 20 years.
“We would like to thank those who have supported us over our time in business and trust that an imaginative and innovative person may fill the gap,” the Mackenzies said.
Pet helpers care
VOLUNTEERS are being sought by the Armidale RSPCA branch to help elderly pet owners care for their animals.
Pets of Older People (POOPS) offers foster care or the feeding of pets in the owner’s own home, as well as assistance with walking dogs, taking pets to the vet and other small jobs.
The local POOPS program will also extend to palliative care and mental health patients.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, there is a meeting at the Armidale Ex-Services Club on Tuesday 14 January at 6.30pm.
For more information call Kitty Thomas on 6771 4401 or RSPCA mobile on 0412 217 364.
