ARMIDALE’S Northern NSW State Cup hopefuls were bundled out at the opening round on the weekend.
North Armidale looked like pipping coastal opponents Northern Storm at Phil Wheaton Oval on Saturday, but were overrun by a side with a longer pre-season under its belt.
Norths took an early lead when Willow Grieves found the back of the net early and it looked as if the home side would go on to win, as the Storm went into half-time with 10 men after a contentious red card.
But the visitors found plenty in response, equalising 10 minutes into the second half before taking the lead with a lucky late goal, which hit both posts before dribbling across the line.
Coach Andy Lennon said he was disappointed to exit the competition early, but could find positives from the match.
“We played quite well and put some well-constructed pieces of play together,” he said.
“It is very encouraging for the season ahead.”
Best for the Redmen were James Frost, Jason Bandy, Nick Griffiths and Grieves.
On Sunday, East Armidale was knocked out in Grafton, losing 4-1 to Westlawn Tigers.
