Fibre funds freeze

ARMIDALE’S biggest businesses will miss out on the National Broadband Network after the Federal Government cut promised funding for a fibre roll-out.
Organisations within the Acacia Park estate, located on the southern outskirts of town, were promised NBN by former New England MP Tony Windsor, but the funds have yet to be forthcoming since the Coalition took government in September.
Current MP Barnaby Joyce told the Armidale Independent that it was unlikely the required $220,000 would be forthcoming.
“At this point in time I would say probably not,” Mr Joyce said.
“I spoke with (Industry Minister) Ian Macfarlane as recently as yesterday (Monday), but I’m being told that there isn’t the money for the project.
“I haven’t stopped trying and I won’t give up, but I would say it’s less likely than more likely.”
Acacia Park, which produces 12 per cent of Armidale’s economy, was originally left off the roll-out map by NBN Co.
After a group of businesses within the estate went to the media to explain the situation in February last year, Mr Windsor made a $220,000 promise in May.
“This fibre rollout will not only help the existing businesses in Acacia Park to access high-speed broadband, but it will also help to attract more businesses into the estate that will see the advantage of being able to hook up to the NBN fibre,” the retired MP said at the time.
“The businesses got together, mounted their case and I am now pleased that they will receive support from a small business grant to have the fibre rolled out in the estate.”
