Artworks inspire conversation

‘Consumed’ is the name of the latest exhibition currently on display at the Armidale Art Gallery in the Mall with artwork by conceptual installation artist Carmel Devine, painter Jim Ridgewell and a collection of photographs and mixed media by local artists who like to remain anonymous and use the name Charlotte Tonn.

Carmel’s pieces of modern installation explore numerous issues including drug addiction, sustainable living and single mothers.

“I have several pieces in the exhibition and most of them are educational,” said Carmel.

“One of the pieces is a shopping trolley that was donated where around ten women collected shopping dockets for me over a six month period. I have filled that trolley with all the dockets.

“My message in this piece is that single mothers do consume and that all the money they are given goes back into society.”

Jim Ridgewell has been painting for around 40 years and this is his first exhibition of work. He previously worked with the public service for 30 years and has now recently retired and can devote his time to painting.

“I went to TAFE with most of the paintings here from that year of study,” said Jim Ridgewell.

“My work is all personal and explores the inter-play of colour and emotion. I try not to portray any deep and meaningful messages in my work.”

Most of the artworks are for sale with the exhibition coming to a close in the next couple of weeks.
