A monster tomato tipping the scales at 850gm was the winner of the “Biggest Tomato in the Armidale District” competition run by Carmel’s Nursery of Kentucky Street East.
Grown by Ms Lynn Baker of Bundarra, it easily outweighed the 590gm specimen grown by Mr Jack Arnold of Armidale.
“We had a good season for a change,” said Ms Baker.
“So our fresh vegetables stall at the bi-monthly Armidale Farmers’ Market has been well stocked this year.”
Ms Baker was in Armidale last week to receive her prize from Carmel at the Nursery.
“I have been well and truly out-weighed,” said Mr Arnold.
“But my challenge was well met by two monsters. The other was a mere 660gm.
“Even so, we have a long “weigh’ to go to compete with the Gunnedah Big Tomatoes.
“The Gunnedah competition organiser, Mr John Campbell of Gunnedah Bowling Club advises that their biggest tomato tipped the scales at 1.82kg.
“So I guess we will just have to go back to the garden next year and see if we can wrench the title from the Gunnedah tomato growers.
“I would like to thank the Armidale Independent for their support of this activity,” said Carmel.
