Laughs for movie lovers

WHILE Australian rock band Eskimo Joe is the headline act, comedian Julia Morris says there won’t be a shortage of entertainment at Flix in the Stix at Armidale next month.
Morris, who is the guest curator of the music and short film festival, last week announced the line-up of films to feature on the regional road show.
“As promised, this is an absolutely spectacular collection full of laughs – and two Australian premieres of US short film Penny Dreadful and UK short film Minimus,” she said.
“The collection is jampacked with award winning shorts and more than half the collection is home-grown talent.”
All the short films are guaranteed to make you laugh, she said.
Penny Dreadful is about a kidnapping gone hilariously wrong and is the winner of more than 25 international film festival audience and jury awards, including at LA Comedy Festival and the prestigious Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival.
Filmmaker Shane Atkinson said he chose Flix in the Sticks to premiere Penny Dreadful in Australia because of his love for the country.
“Flix has such a great ethos and I am all about taking culture to regional areas,” he said.
“Who knows, maybe I will meet a future filmmaker on the festival circuit who was inspired by my film in somewhere like Armidale,” he said.
Winner of Best Short Film at the Chicago Comedy Film Festival, Minimus is the story of the weediest gladiator in the history of Rome.
Directed by Jonathan Hopkins and written by his brother Cabell Hopkins, it stars Adam Brown from The Hobbit.
More than half the films are from Australian and New Zealand filmmakers and include renowned and beloved Australian actors such as Logie award winner Rob Carlton (Paper Giants, Chandon Pictures) and Offspring favourite Richard Davies (Jimmy Proudman).
Simon Rollin, founder and tour director of Flix in the Stix, said Armidale residents would have a great night out.
The festival rolls into Armidale on Saturday 8 February at Saumarez Homestead.
