LOCAL tennis player John Cameron finished in the top two in the Tennis Seniors NSW State Championships at Pennant Hills in Sydney held over the October long weekend.
An ankle injury in his 65 Men’s Singles match against Hayden Rees of Victoria made life tough for Cameron. He was able to hold on to win 6/2, 6/4.
In the semi-final, he played number one seed Michael Pyne who is currently ranked equal number one (with Peter Kellar of Victoria) in the 65 Men’s division in Australia. Cameron won the match in three sets 6/3, 3/6/ 6/3.
However, the semi-final match aggravated his ankle injury and he was forced to withdraw from the 60s and 65s Men’s Doubles where he had some success in 2012. Because of his win in the semi-finals Cameron decided to contest the singles finals on Monday 7 October. Unfortunately, the ankle injury may have contributed to him being soundly beaten 6/1, 6/0 by Lee Taylor of Queensland.
Taylor is currently ranked number six and Cameron is number eight in the Australian 65 Men’s age group.
With the ankle injury on the mend Cameron is already looking towards 2014 where he may compete in tournaments at Walcha, Inverell, West Tamworth, Gunnedah and possibly the Queensland State Senior Tennis Championships in July.
