Funding hits a high note

THE New England Conservatorium of Music (NECOM) has secured funding of $51,000 from the NSW Government for two important music programs in 2014.
Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall announced the funding last week and said the financial support was warmly welcomed by NECOM as it could now confidently plan the programs’ implementation and timetables.
“A grant of $28,625 will go towards the commissioning and presentation of two works for massed primary choirs and a secondary school choirs and orchestra by Australian composers Christopher Gordon and Harley Mead, with text by Australian author, Armidale’s Sophie Masson,” Mr Marshall said.
“The works will premiere at the New England Sings! concert series in October next year to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Conservatorium.
“The remaining $22,677 will go towards presenting a series of four concerts in historic New England homesteads, as well as associated master classes and workshops,” he said.
“This funding allows NECOM to not only offer their core activities but also offer programs that enhance regional diversity, excellence and innovation in musical performance.
“NECOM plays an important role in encouraging musicians of all ages throughout the region to experience, learn and perform music,” Mr Marshall said.
“It is the jewel in our region’s cultural crown and is very deserving of this support from the NSW Government.”
NECOM Director Susanne James said she was delighted to receive the funding, which will allow her to begin booking artists and venues for the programs.
“We’re particularly excited about the concerts we will stage in four of New England’s historic homesteads,” Ms James said.
“We ran the program for the first time last year but had no funding, so to receive this support from the Government will certainly make it a wonderful concert series.”
