JUNIOR club cricket began in earnest last week with players aged five to 16 years pulling on their whites in anticipation of another glorious summer of cricket.
Armidale’s junior competition involves teams from six town-based cricket clubs and is run in under-9s, 10s, 12s, 14s and 16s age groups.
Most junior cricket is played on Saturday mornings from Milo in2cricket right through to the under-14s who began their first two-day match last Saturday.
Modified games are played for all ages up to 12 years, with a gradual movement towards opens rules as players’ age and skill level progresses.
The under-16 competition this year is being run on Monday afternoons in order to give players the opportunity of playing on turf wickets.
Armidale Cricket has seen a marked increase in the number of girls playing over the past few years, with one local club now having female players in all of their teams.
Junior president Michael Dennis encourages prospective players, male and female, to contact the Association, or visit the website, if they would like more information about joining a club.
“The competition has only just begun and if new players want to join we will be able to find them a spot at one or other of the clubs for the coming season,” he said.
“There are various clubs with spots available in one or more age groups and we’re always keen to see new players joining. It’s not too late to sign up.”
