Time for fun summer sticks

By JO HARRISON

WITH the winter sports season drawing to a close the WHK Indoor Hockey organising committee has been busy organising the 2013-2014 summer competition.
The representative teams have been selected and nominations have been called for teams to participate in the upcoming competition.
This season WHK Indoor will be offering Primary 3, Primary 2, Open Primary, Under-13, Under-16, Women’s and Open divisions.
The growth in interest in the sport has led to an increase in the number of teams being entered in the local competition and as a result more teams entering the HNSW indoor state championships.
WHK Indoor Hockey will again enter under-13, under-15 and under-18 girls and boys sides in HNSW indoor state championships and an open men’s and women’s team will also participate.
Last season, both the men’s and woman’s masters attended the state championships for the first time and won their divisions.
Locally indoor hockey is available to anyone who wishes to participate. Officials wish to encourage children of any age to give it a try as the game has so much to offer.
It is not a requirement to have played outdoor hockey to play in the indoor game. The pace and skills of the game makes it very attractive and keeps the participants focused the whole game.
There are no washed out games and players are out of the summer sun. There is also a supply of indoor sticks available for junior players to use which helps keep the costs down. All that is required are shin and mouth guards.
The indoor hockey competition will commence on mid October and will use ’The Den’ which is located in the grounds of Armidale High School. The two courts at this facility the sport will have room to accommodate the rapid growth seen in the last few seasons.
The games will be played on Friday evenings for the primary school divisions with the other grades on Thursday evenings and women’s on Sunday afternoons.
