ARMIDALE Golf Club president Vanessa Ward scorched the course on the weekend to take a commanding lead in the women’s club championship.
After her rounds on Saturday and Sunday, Ward holds a massive eight-shot lead after scoring 81 and 89 for a gross score of 170.
“I don’t think I could have played any worse (on Sunday),” Ward said.
“My short game was pretty bad.”
With another two rounds to play, Ward will be hard to beat for the New England Mutual-sponsored event.
Jan Kirk leads the chasing pack with a gross score of 178, followed by Candice McCann.
In the men’s championship, Tim Murray shot 71 and 72 off the stick to hold a comfortable five-shot lead over Craig Hudye, with Gary Emery a further one shot back.
Play continues in the club championships on Saturday, with the final round to be played on Sunday.
