Gates open for appeal

SOME of Armidale’s best and brightest gardens will go on display this Saturday in a bid to raise funds for the New England Drought Relief Appeal.
Despite good, soaking rain this week, many dams in the district are still empty and it’s unlikely there will be any substantial growth between now and spring.
Eight gardens will be open to the public with the support of the four district garden clubs – Armidale, Armidale Town & Country, Guyra and Uralla – with entry to each garden $5 or $30 for access to them all.
Three gardens are within the township, all on The Boulevarde, while another five are on the outskirts, all within a 15 minute drive from the CBD.
Morning and afternoon tea will be available at select gardens, while a sausage sizzle will also be held at Lou and John Forsythe’s property on Milne Road.
To make the tour more interesting for children, seven of the gardens have a clue in them for a treasure hunt.
Each entry form has a series of questions, with one quite obvious answer to be found at each of the gardens.
The winner will received a set of children’s gardening tools and a child-sized wheelbarrow.
All proceeds go to the drought appeal, which will support farmers in the New England.
