New England Bowls By RICHIE CLUTTERBUCK
THE junior championships were played are Guyra over the weekend and the pairs match between Justin Bullen and Jack Whitton against Breanna Graham and Nick Ellem proved to be a real thriller. The scores were level at 16-all with one end to play and Breanna drew the shot only to see Justin remove the bowl. Breanna then failed narrowly to draw the shot again and victory went to Justin and Jack 17-16. In the semi-final of the singles Jack defeated Breanna and Nick defeated Justin. The final went to Nick form Glen Innes 31-19 and from reports I have received both players played well and we wish all players the best in the zone juniors play-offs.
Seniors bow out
AT Inverell the seniors took to the green for the annual zone 3 round robin and defending champions New England failed to retain their title, winning only two of their six matches. The winners were North West with five wins plus 27 from Central Northern four wins plus 11. New England finished third on two wins minus 11 and Gwydir last on one win minus one. The following teams have been announced to contest the State Final from 20-22 May at Ulludulla. Ray Dixon, Ian Briggs, Dave Kliendienst, Neville Ryan, Ross Grudgefield, Kim Greentree, Graham Smith, Laurie Gilbert, Brian Cullen, Geoff Lockwood, Jeff Myers and Paul Whitten (subject to confirmation). Standby players are Mark Golledge and Jacko Ross.
Triples carnival on
THE annual Ex-Services mixed triples carnival will be held this weekend and a full field of 16 teams will take to the carpet on Saturday morning and continue through to Sunday. The following Saturday Andrew McLennan will celebrate his President’s day at the Servies. This will be my last report for a couple of weeks as I am off to Tasmania to manage the NSW Blues in their quest to win a third straight Alley Shield. Good bowling to all and remember we cannot all be winners so be a good loser.
