JAY Stone was crowned Armidale Athletics’ senior athlete of the year at Sunday’s gala day at Harris Park.
Hundreds of competitors from Armidale and the region took part in what was the final major meet of the year.
Stone won his ninth gong in 11 years when he was crowned the top senior athlete.
His achievements this year were highlighted by winning three national masters championships in the 400m, 200m and 4x400m relay.
Along the way, Stone set a new NSW and Australian Masters record in the 30-34 men’s 4x400m relay and equalled the Australian Masters Championships meet record in the 200m.
The junior athlete of the year award was won by N’Dea Rumble.
Rumble won the award for the fifth consecutive year.
Her achievements last season were highlighted by winning the CHS State Championship in the 800m, a silver medal in the 17 years 4x400m relay (despite only being 14), and two fourth placings at the NSW All Schools championships, in times which qualified Rumble for next year’s National Championships.
Sunday’s best on ground award was taken out by Natasha Favotto, who continued her fine form this season with some impressive performances.
Despite the windy conditions, Favotto achieved the Roberts and Morrow standards of excellence in the 800m, 1500m and 3000m events, as well as breaking the under-17 1500m record on the day.
