Cutting now open
WORK on the Kempsey Road to repair the Flying Fox Cutting Slip failure is now complete with the road reopened to traffic.
Extensive repairs began in October after heavy rainfall during January 2013.
This caused the river to flood and washed away sections of the embankment supporting the single lane road.
“Council engaged a contractor to construct retaining walls in four locations to provide a stable platform to support the road,” Armidale Dumaresq Council’s works engineer Steve Finch said.
“The works were completed on 9 December, costing over $500,000.”
The road is a single lane gravel road in mountainous terrain, and therefore unsuitable for long vehicles and vehicles towing caravans.
