Cudgen have claimed the Tweed District Cricket third grade title in decisive manner at Kingscliff.
The home team defeated Murwillumbah outright by 10 wickets to take the trophy for this year and their A grade look set to follow suit after making it through to host the LJ Hooker League first grade title this weekend. The Cudgen side will host the grand final at Reg Dalton Oval, Kingscliff.
Cudgen batted first in the third grade decider and were all out for 209. Youngster Matt Keyte top scored with 78, with Dylan Stoddart making 30.
Bruce Condon 4/16 and Blake Gilmore 2/28 were the best of Murwillumbah’s bowlers and, by the end of the day, the visitors were 2-27 in reply.
Resuming the next morning, Murwillumbah were dismissed for 128, with Bruce Condon top scoring with 41 and Scott Foyster 15. For Cudgen Shane Lee, Steven Morgan and Andrew Stoddart shared the wickets.
With Murwillumbah still trailing by 81 runs, Cudgen enforced the follow-on.
Matt Keyte once again proved his team’s hero, taking 5/34 as Murwillumbah crashed to be all out for for 132. Sam Reynolds top scored with 31 and Lionel McCloy 25.
Cudgen needed 52 to win and opening pair, Father and son Gerry (21*) and Matt Keyte (28*) got the runs, sealing the 10 wicket win.
Obvious man of the match Matt Keyte, scoring 106 runs for the match and taking five wickets, has been invited to play for the Gold Coast U/16s in the Brisbane based Warehouse Winter Competition.
