THE University of New England (UNE) Twilight Soccer Competition held at SportUNE concluded with the ‘Mighty Boosh’ team taking out the Open Men’s grade, with a score of 34 points.
Close behind them were the Lads and Dads team finishing on 31 points and Stro United and Filthy Geckos finishing in third and fourth place respectively on 24 and 19 points.
“Our team have played together for some time now and we have come close to being on top of the leader board, but not quite got there,” said captain of ‘Mighty Boosh’ Mark Leoni.
“This year we did and we had lots of fun along the way.”
The Open Mixed competition was closely fought with the ‘Roberts and Morrow Hippos’ narrowly defeating the ‘Evil Geniuses’ team 9-8 in the grand final playoff. “Both teams were neck and neck throughout the competition so it was fitting to see them play in such a close game for the final,” said sports co-ordinator at UNE, Brad King.
The nine-week competition is a ‘first past the post’ style competition, where teams score points for each round. All teams who participated are to be congratulated for their sportsmanship and organisers of the competition are looking forward to seeing even more teams in the Spring competition. A thankyou to Werner Schwartz and all of the other officials who helped make the summer competition a success.
